Well, I am now writing this letter from Morelia, Michoacán with a Dominican by my side.
This last week we had interviews with our president. It was awesome and I just have to tell you that I absolutely love my president. He is just awesome. Anyways in the interview the president told me that I was going to have transfers. He then asked me where I have been my whole mission (I think he knew the answer but I answered him anyways). I told him that I have been in Jalisco all of my mission. He then said that not anymore! He told me that I have changes and my new area is Prados Verdes 1 in Morelia, Michoacán. He then thanked me for my participation in the Mission Leadership counsel, that I really made a difference there, and that I had helped out the mission with my service. He said that he would like to keep me there as a member in the counsel but it was time for me to move on into another assignment in the mission. He then told me that I would be training a new missionary and that I would be opening an area.
So here I am... finally I made it to Michoacán. It is my first time here in Morelia and it is a lot different than Guadalajara... it seems a little more calm and there are a lot more trees. I just arrived here today.
Yesterday we had the meeting to recieve our new freshly green companion. During the meeting I was asked to translate so that the new gringos could understand the meeting. And let me tell you... translating is hard. You think it'd be easy if you understand and speak the two languages but honestly... it was really hard for me to translate from Spanish to English... and keep a good pace and translate all of the comments from Spanish to English and also English to Spanish for everyone to understand. It was tough but like Dad always says, "Nailed it!"
I then recieved my new companion and his name is Elder Vargas. He is from the Dominican Republic... ring a bell? My other son (the first missionary that I trained) was also from the Dominican Republic. Its actually kind of strange that I will have trained two dominicanos because there really arent that many in the mission.... out of the 232 missionarys there are probably only about 5 from the Dominican Republic. Elder Vargas seems to be a good guy and I am excited to be able to work with him. The only problem is... I dont understand him. They speak Spanish in his country but his accent is so thick and so different that I really have to pay attention or I honestly have no idea what he is trying to say me. Thankfully I know some Dominican words from training my first Dominican, Elder Francisco. One example of a different word is... instead of saying camión (bus)... they say Gua Gua. Weird right? Anyways he seems awesome and I am sure I am going to be able to understand him a little bit better after being with him for a little while longer. It's strange though because he almost understands me perfectly... but it takes a serious effort to understand what he is saying. He is a pretty awesome guy.
So it appears that I will be ending my mission in Prados Verdes 1. Here I am training a new missionary, the district leader of a small district of 6 missionaries, opening an area, battling understanding my companion, and absolutely loving the mission!
Love you all,
Elder Summers
